Google Wave

Fri Nov 27, 2009, 9:48 AM
I think Ayreon said it best: "So seductive and yet so destructive."

Aside from my worries about the cloud becoming the dominate form of computing, Google Wave is certainly an awesome project. It has a lot of room for improvement still, but then again it's still in beta. Right now I have only three real issues with Wave.

The first is the lack of an undo function. I've accidentally deleted extensions while playing around with it, and once an extension is gone it appears to be gone for good. Well, you can always add the extension again, but it'll be reset and you'll have to add any data you've already entered again.

Speaking of extensions, the second issue is the inability to permanently install third party extensions. So be prepared to do a lot of copy/paste.

Finally, there's no way to save waves locally on my hard drive yet. This is part of my concerns regarding cloud computing. A lack of privacy, a dependence on a working internet connection, and a dependence on working remote servers makes it very difficult for me to put complete trust in the cloud. Additionally, I read an article somewhere about the effect of data transfer errors has on cloud computing, and how much redundancy is needed to combat that. Don't get me wrong: the cloud is useful when used properly. However, not everything needs to be done in the cloud, and the things are are done well in the cloud still need to have local backup options.

But again, Google Wave is still in beta, so these issues aren't killer yet. I'm definitely curious to see how this experiment turns out.

I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something.
